No reason in the logs for the crash.
System required manual intervention to bring it back online as during
the crash there was some corruption of the filesystem.
While this server was down, outbound authenticated SMTP was hampered -
one of the outbound SMTP servers was configured to use only one of the
authentication servers causing 'password incorrect' issues.
The POP and IMAP servers, though, were mapped out correctly when the
authentication server that 1/2 of them were connected to went down.
There may have been a few stray authentication failures for POP and
IMAP service while the load balancer was testing prior to the servers
being mapped out of service until they could authenticate correctly
again.
The outbound SMTP servers have been reconfigured to take advantage of
the redundancy we have for the authentication servers and a crashing
authentication server should no longer cause an outage on our network.
